In Tough Times
People (and Horses) Serve in Record Numbers
Minneapolis,
Minnesota, August 20, 2009 – Despite challenges of bad economics the number of volunteers in this
country has increased by about one million. (Volunteering in America July 2009
Report) Those giving service are not all people, though. In their new book
Horses with a Mission: Extraordinary True Stories of Equine Service (New World
Library, September 2009), best-selling, award-winning St. Louis Park, Minnesota
authors Allen and Linda Anderson chronicle 21 true stories of horses who have
found their life’s calling. These horses give without expecting a return, other
than maybe the occasional carrot. Horses with a Mission is available in
bookstores nationwide and online.
The Andersons say, “If you’ve ever thought that horses
only display abilities on race tracks, in riding stables, in beer commercials,
or in movies, you’re missing out on their ever-expanding services as sentient
partners and willing coworkers.”
The book introduces horse volunteers who aid in therapy
sessions, give disabled riders freedom and mobility, heal childhood abuse, save
lives, help people fulfill dreams, and bring messages of hope and unconditional
love to those who need them most.
Carson Kressley, equestrian and Emmy award-winningTV host as the “Fab Five’s” fashion expert on Queer Eye, says, “This collection
of stories will remind anyone who has ever had a horse as a best friend,
confidante, and soul mate of what a special gift that can be.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Minnesota Authors Discover
Secret to Longevity:
Pay Attention If Your Dog Smiles
Minneapolis,
Minnesota, August 20, 2009 – St. Louis Park, Minnesota residents Allen and Linda Anderson have
discovered the secret to longevity: pay attention if your dog is smiling. Their
yellow Labrador retriever Taylor’s goofy grin on a walk around Lake Harriet in
Minneapolis inspired the Andersons thirteen years ago to start the Angel
Animals Network (www.angelanimals.net)for sharing miraculous benefits of human-animal relationships.
Passersby that day stopped the couple to ask, “Do you know your dog is smiling?” This gave
these two mid-life empty-nesters the idea to show the world that animals have
spiritual qualities such as joy, gratitude, creativity, and unconditional love.
Even though they were like most other people and living from paycheck to
paycheck, they also wanted to prove that it’s never too late in life to make a
difference by bringing more love and healing into this world. Today, the
Andersons are best-selling authors of twelve books with over a quarter million
books in print.
Although
many people back in 1996 still thought of pets as property and disposable, the
Andersons hoped to portray animals as sentient family members who fill a home
with peace and joy. Allen Anderson says, “Our dream was to help ordinary people
express to the world an appreciation and awe for animal heroes. We believe thatthe power of story can help decrease abuse and increase adoption.”
But thejourney for both of them has included overcoming severe health and financial
obstacles that would have derailed most people. They credit Angel Animals and
their pets with saving their lives.
In
a country where two out of three homes have pets the Andersons realized they
had struck a deeply emotional chord. They concluded that the best service they
could provide would be to gather such a large body of anecdotes that the
spiritual nature of animals could no longer be denied. They would offer
uplifting, undeniable messages that would cause people to never look at animals
the same way again.
Within
a few months, the Andersons were sharing stories they were receiving from
around the world and publishing them in their first printed newsletter. Soon, they had a contract for their first book, Angel Animals.
One book grew into aseries of twelve, to date, and an enduring relationship with their publisher
New World Library in Novato, California, a company that publishes Eckhart Tolle
(The Power of Now), Deepak Chopra, Mother Teresa, Joseph Campbell, Wayne Dyer, and other authors of life-changing books.
The Andersons’ accomplishments so far include:
- Angel Animals books
published in the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil, and Italy
- a Certificate of
Commendation from the Governor for contributions to the state of Minnesota
- features in Gannett,
Associated Press, and other national wire service articles, Star Tribune,
Pioneer Press, Washington Post, Today show, ABC’s Nightly News, NPR, USA
Today, Montel, Animal Planet, Shirley MacLaine’s radio show, BBC Radio,
and London Sunday Times
- their book, Rescued,
chronicling the largest animal rescue operation in history after Hurricane
Katrina, winning American Society of Journalists & Authors (ASJA)
Outstanding Book Award.
Linda Anderson, instructor at The Loft Literary Center in
Minneapolis and graduate of St. Cloud State University, says, “Our greatest
satisfaction comes from people telling us that reading our books has helped
them through the devastation of pet loss. Or that they decided to keep an
animal they might have abandoned because a story revealed something they hadn’t
understood about pets. This project has seen us through the tough times because
it continues to inspire us, too. We’ve learned that it’s really true -- the
secret to longevity is doing what you love and loving what you do.”
The Andersons’ new book is Horses with a Mission:Extraordinary True Stories of Equine Service (September, 2009, New World
Library) available in bookstores and online nationwide.

NEW
CONTEST AND BOOK TO FIND OUT WHY WOMEN PREFER DOGS
A BizRate research study found that
over half of the women surveyed believed their pets are more affectionate and
cuter than their partners. A new contest and book will feature true stories
that demonstrate the extraordinary nature of relationships between women and
dogs.
Minneapolis, Minnesota, August 20, 2009 – We’ve all
seen them – those tiny women tugging on a leash attached to a big, burly dog or
the ladies who carry their little pooches everywhere. What’s the big attraction
between women and canine companions? Allen and Linda Anderson, award-winning,
best-selling authors of the Angel Animals series, are sponsoring a contest to
gather true stories of dogs and the women who love them for their next new
book.
Linda
Anderson says, “We’re looking for experiences women have that show the benefits
of finding unconditional love, acceptance, and fulfillment with dogs. Women and
dog teams often become outstanding partners, giving service in extraordinary
ways. We want to find their stories for possible publication in our next book.”
Contest
deadline is September 15, 2009 but people can continue to send stories for the
book to angelanimals@aol.com after
the contest is over. Full description, rules, prizes, and contest entry form
are at www.angelanimals.net/contests.html . There
is no entry fee but there are cash prizes.
The contest
is designed to find life stories of remarkable women who are fulfilling their
purpose in life with the help of dogs. From dogs as protectors to partners in
the dance of life the winning stories will honor a relationship that is like no
other.
Any contest
entries, but especially those of the winners, will be considered for possible
publication in the new book Dogs and the Women Who Love Them by Allen
and Linda Anderson to be published by New World Library in Fall 2010. Previous
books in the Angel Animals series have included many stories that were contest
entries.
The
Andersons suggest considering the following questions and entering the contest
by writing about profound experiences:
- Has a dog been there for a
woman during challenging times or major events in her life?
- Have there been times when a
dog has protected people or warned them of possible danger? Has a dog
performed an act of compassion, protection, healing, or heroic courage?
- Have a woman and a dog teamed
up to fulfill a life purpose and/or perform acts of service?
- Did a dog lead a woman to
finding her purpose in life? Has a dog taken on the mission of giving
service?
- Has a dog brought people a
message of love, acceptance, gratitude, or inner direction?
- Has a relationship with a dog
been a catalyst for physical, emotional, or spiritual healing?
- Has it been apparent that a dog
was meant to be in a woman’s life at a certain time for a special purpose?
- Has the example of a dog caused
a woman to become a better friend, spouse, parent, or family member?
- Are there examples dogs have
shown for how to handle life's challenges, deal with change, heal, trust,
or creatively solve problems?
- How has a dog's ability to live
in the now helped a woman or others become present to their own life?
- Has a dog been a mirror to a
woman’s life, health, or attitudes by reflecting them back to her in some
way?
- What have dogs taught a woman
about death, dying, grieving, and the afterlife?
Allen and
Linda Anderson are a husband and wife writing team, founders of the Angel
Animals Network, and inspirational speakers (www.angelanimals.net). They are
authors of the popular anthology series that includes Angel Dogs with a
Mission and Angel Dogs: Divine Messengers of Love. Their latest book
is Horses with a Mission (New World Library, September 2009)
The Andersons founded the Angel Animals Network to
use the positive power of story for the benefit of people and animals. They
donate a portion of their book revenues to support animal shelters. Their work
has been featured on NBC's Today Show, ABC's Nightly News, Montel, and Animal
Planet, among others.
They have been the subject of numerous national
magazine and wire service articles and have been interviewed for London
newspapers and BBC Radio. They write Reader Blogs for the online Seattle
Post-Intelligencer and the Houston Chronicle and host the Angel Pets Fan Club
at Beliefnet.com.
